Kent family manuscripts : Helen Kent collection, 1852-1974.

This collection includes assorted papers about the history of the Kent family and Calais, Vermont. It includes writings by Dorman B. E. Kent about his grandfather, Abdiel Kent; a history of Calais; a paper written for stunt night 1929; and an address given in Calais in 1941. There is also a paper written for "The Club" in 1962 by Herbert A. Dwinell about Dorman B. E. Kent. This paper contains some ancestral history and Dorman's biography. There are also two diaries of Herbert Allen Kent (1886 and 1894) and an account book belonging to Dr. Prentiss Kent that also includes a family genealogy. There are a few miscellaneous clippings concerning cousin and successful industrialist Atwater Kent and clippings about the Kent Museum in Calais.

Dorman Bridgman Eaton Kent descended from a prominent 19th century Calais, Vermont family. His ancestor, Remember Kent (1775-1855), settled in Calais in 1798. Dorman Bridgman (sometimes spelled Bridgeman) Eaton Kent, the son of Ruth Bennett and Murray Abdiel Kent (1847-1915), was born on November 1, 1875, in Kents Corner, Calais. Abdiel Kent was born on November 10, 1805 in Calais, Vermont, the son of Remember and Rachel (Bliss) Kent. When he was 21 he moved to New Hampshire where he studied the mason's trade and opened a factory. He returned to Calais around 1830 and established a boot and shoe factory. In 1832 the factory added merchandise. In 1837 he became partners with his brother, Ira, and the store became "I. & A. Kent, Boot and Shoe Manufacturers". This shop operated for about 40 years.
